Reflections of Start up Fellows

Antarprerana has been working on 'Strengthening Goat Farmers' capacity Through the Students' Engagement' project in collaboration with Heifer Project Nepal.  In this project, 34 students are engaged in 10 cooperatives of Chitwan and Nepalgunj to strengthen the capacities of 60 model goat farmers by helping them develop bankable business plans as well as provide them with technical assistance to strengthen their business operation capacity. Students from Brightland College, Nepalgunj, and Presidency College of Management and Science, Chitwan have been engaged as startup fellows from the past eight months.

The objective of this project is to undertake the need assessment survey of goat farmers, and cooperatives, provide mentorship and assist in developing a business plan of farmers and co-operatives. This has been an opportunity for the students as the project stimulated cross-learning opportunities for students, farmers, cooperatives, and value chain actors.

Take a look at what some of the students have to say about their experience of working with goat farmers, cooperatives, Antarprerana, and Heifer Project Nepal:

I have always admired the positivity radiating from Antarprerana and the team. It was one of the reasons that I pushed myself into the project. The growth and experience that I have received throughout this project would be hard to convey in a few words. This experience has built credentials in us that will help us in the future. Even in this intricate time, our team was able to give our best in the project. However, we all have a lot of improvements to be made and I feel like the team has got our back. This journey has left a print in my life all thanks to the team and I hope that we make you proud.

My name is Pooja Singh Thakuri a student of Brightland College from Nepalgunj. I am part of Antarprerana as a start-up fellow. The initiative #workinnepal taken by Antarprerana has always been an allure to me. This journey has been an opportunity for me to learn about various aspects of business and how to communicate with people with patience. The chance to research about goat farming has helped me develop my capabilities and helped me grow as a person. The Antarprerana team has been kind and helpful throughout this journey.

It has been an amazing five months working and learning with Antarprerana. As most of the Nepali youths are looking for opportunities and direction, I think Antarprerana provides the exact thing I was looking for. During this period of lockdown, there was no better way to spend and utilize my time than learning and interacting with our excellent mentors and other startup fellows. After joining this project, I have had the chance to interact with our hard-working goat farmers and understand the kind of problems they face due to the lack of opportunity. Heifer International along with Antarprerana’s team have been giving their best. And a big shoutout to our gurus Shraddha mam, Sunil sir, Ummid sir, and many more who are helping us throughout this process.

Anshdeep Singh, BASW-1st year, Brightland College, Nepalgunj

I am Anshdeep Singh, a startup fellow here at Antarprerana. I came to know about the opportunity of working on this project from my college. From a very young age, I have shown a keen interest in farming & animals and have always wanted to open up a farm. This project has helped me understand the complexity of being a farmer and I have been able to stay productive amid this pandemic and increase the horizon of my knowledge with all the sessions that Antarprerana has provided.

Antarprerana has given me a platform to enhance my entrepreneurship skills, develop my communication skill, interpersonal skill, and leadership skill which are essential for an entrepreneur. It has provided us with the opportunity to visit the farmer who raises goats for their livelihood and business purposes. During those interactions with farmers I have gained insights on the real problems and challenges faced by them and how cooperative and Antarprerana have helped them grow their business by providing assistance, solving their problems, and guiding them for a better way of farming. I have had the opportunity of conversing with the farmers and listening to their stories of the struggle they face while raising goats, their way of solving the problems on their own, or with the help of other cooperatives and organizations. It was interesting to hear about their future goals and their expectations from the cooperative and other helping organizations. I have learned a brief idea about what it takes to do goat farming. I learned to do their detailed analysis of various aspects of business, swot analysis, developing business plans. I am confident that the learnings that I have gained as a start-up fellow of Antarprerana will enable me to have a better understanding of business prospects, making business plans effectively, and develop myself as a competent entrepreneur in the future.

Throughout the project, the students involved have shown constant enthusiasm and want to make a difference even with the current situation. The lockdown imposed due to the pandemic sure was a hurdle, but the students were able to work around it. It is commendable to see these students grow as a person and increase their horizons of knowledge and experience.
